Nelson Street Carpark Mural

Created for Fairfield City Council, this three-storey mural was developed through three community consultation sessions, where local residents were invited to share the stories, symbols and themes they felt should be represented in the artwork.

A central female figure was chosen to acknowledge and celebrate the women of Fairfield, particularly within a community shaped by many refugee and migrant experiences. The intention was to create a strong and visible representation of women in the public realm, reinforcing their importance within community life.

The figure is framed by patterns inspired by a Hassira, a traditional woven mat used by families to sit, eat and gather together. Native flora and fauna were also incorporated to reflect the Australian environment, while the use of light throughout the composition speaks to hope, opportunity and future possibilities.

The final artwork brings these elements together as a reflection of family, culture, resilience and belonging, shaped directly by the voices of the local community.
